Mississauga - Snow Clearing Program ready to accept applications

Mississauga News

MISSISSAUGA — Winter might still be several months away but it’s never too early to start preparing.

That’s why the City of Mississauga is reminding seniors and residents with disabilities that they can apply for the driveway windrow snow-clearing program starting Tuesday.

Windrows are the snow left at the bottom of driveways and, while it’s more of an inconvenience for the hale and hearty, clearing them can be downright difficult for the elderly or those with a physical disability.

"The program is open early to reach as many people as possible with this service (that) helps people live independently," said Bob Levesque, the City’s manager of works, maintenance and operations. "The service runs after each snow plowing."

The program operates from Nov. 24 to March 13. The service will plow a three-metre wide area at the end of the driveway, wide enough for at least one car to pass. City officials say it could take up to 36 hours after a snowfall to get to all the signed-up homes.

It’s open to seniors (those aged 65 years and older) and those with disabilities. It either costs $200 or is free to resident who meet the financial assistance criteria.

Those interested in applying can find an application form online.  Click to view. They can also be found at community centres, the Recreation Customer Service Centre and the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre.

Applications will be accepted until Nov. 14.
